Bali Journal

Posted by Unknown on 22.59 with No comments
On 3 April 2014, My friends and I went to Bali in our school event named "Turbud". It means a culture trip. I have been to Bali many times, but it was the first time I went there with my friends. First of all, we must bring some requirements, such as clothes and many more. We gathered in Kebon Kawung station at 5.00 PM. The journey to Bali takes nearly 36 hours. First, we depart with Turangga train at 8 PM. The train wasn't delayed. We arrived at Gubeng Station in Surabaya at 8 AM. I never been in night train before. Also, I think that Bandung - Surabaya must take more than 12 hours, because if we drive it takes nearly a day. After arriving at Gubeng Station, we went to the bus. We continue our trip with bus. At noon, we have a lunch, also at night we have a dinner. At 8 PM, we take a ferry to Gilimanuk. It was already dark, so we can't see anything. After that, we continue our trip to Nirmala Hotel Denpasar. At 12 AM in the next day, we arrived. It was such a tiring journey.

In the first day, we went to Tanjung Benoa. There is a place that we can play watersports. I only takes trip to Turtle Island. The island was a place to conserve the turtles. I had pictures there with my friends. We having lunch there also. After finish play watersports, we went to Pudjamandala. It was a place that we can see 5 majority religions in Indonesia having their holy sites. It is the one and only in Indonesia. It reflects that tolerance is living in the middle of Bali's people. We hopes that this spirit can be applied in all regions in Indonesia, so we can be a better country. After that, we went to GWK. GWK is a abbreviation of Garuda Wisnu Kencana. It is statue complex that if all the statues is done, it will be the highest statue in the world. It is located in the Jimbaran Hills, so we can see the Airport, Kuta, and Denpasar City from there. In the place, there is a holy water source that if we drink them, our pray will be happened. I never see it before because it was been a long time since the last time I went there. As a Hindu, I pray and drink the water there. The GWK project is have been long suspended because the 1998 financial crisis. But now, in some places there, the project continued again. After see the statue, we play a game. The task is to finding all clues and guessing what is that. Our class won and we got prize money. After that, we headed to Jimbaran Bay for having a dinner. The dinner was amazing because we can see planes land and take-offs. There also some performance from our friends.

The second day, we went to Penglipuran Cultural Village. There we can see the ancient and traditional Bali Village. There are 2 different culture that lived in Bali, Bali Aga (known as old Bali) that lived only in some places like Penglipuran and Trunyan, and the others people called Bali Majapahit. Except Bali Aga people, we having a close relationship with java people because we are the remainders from Majapahit kingdom. After that, we went to Kintamani. There we only having a lunch, but the journey there is amazing. After finishing, we went to Sukawati. I was picked up by my uncle to my house in Bali. My house in Bali is not so far from Sukawati. I haven't met my grandfather and grandmother for a long time. We hat some chats. Then, I headed back to the hotel for the night event called 'Makrab'. We had some performance from our friends.

The last day, we went to Pandawa Beach. In the way there, we hat an accident. Our bus is crashed with a motorbike. So, we join with other buses to get there. Pandawa Beach is a new beach that previously blocked by hills. There we had tug of war game. Again, we win and get prize money. After that, we headed to Krisna. Krisna is a shopping store. Because I have a lot of them and not interested in shopping, I went to the bus. Some of my friends including me want to go to Kuta Beach. We must ride a elf car to there because bus wasn't permitted to go there. There we having some beachwalk. After that, we directly going to I Gusti Ngurah Rai International Airport. We depart with AirAsia plane A320-200 at 5.30 PM. The touchdown was smooth, but I shocked because near the Bandung Airport, there were many tall buildings. We must move this airport to outer city as soon as possible, because the airport also didn't sufficient for flight. I arrived at home at 8 PM. It was such a amazing journey.

The Story of 998 Brick

source : http://www.lovingsilence.org/cms/content/The-Story-of-998-Bricks

After about eight years practicing in the forests of Thailand, his teacher Ajahn Chah sent him to start a monastery in Australia. Since hired workers were very expensive there, the monks themselves had to learn to lay bricks.

Ajahn Brahm's Cambridge education had taught him no such skills! Nevertheless he took to the task with great enthusiasm. He decided he would approach the task of laying bricks as though it was a meditation. So with great diligence and care, Ajahn Brahm set each and every brick.

Ask any brick layer, this is not as easy as it seems! The ability to evenly balance bricks in mortar takes slow and careful labor. After several days of careful work, Ajahn Brahm stood back to admire his work. He was horrified: there were two crooked bricks!

"How can I ever be enlightened if I can't even make a simple wall properly?" he thought. So he pleaded with the Abbot to be allowed to break the wall and start again. Could he at least grind the bricks so they looked even with the others? He was denied permission and told that the wall was good enough. There were other important projects to work on.

However ‘good enough’ wasn't what Ajahn Brahm wanted. For several months whenever he passed the wall he inwardly berated his poor workmanship. It reminded him of all his previous failures and all the imperfections in his life.

Then one day, a visitor came and Ajahn was asked to show him around the monastery. Usually, out of embarrassment Ajahn Brahm avoided taking people past the wall he had built. Somehow on this day they happened to walk past that wall. As they were walking the visitor spontaneously remarked "That’s a fine wall. Did you make it?"

Ajahn Brahm was stunned. “Sir, have you left your glasses at home? Can't you see those two crooked bricks?” he asked.

“Yes I can," smiled the visitor, "but I can also see the 998 good ones.”

This simple statement changed Ajahn Brahm's life. He realized that his whole life he had been focusing on what was WRONG, what was MISSING, what was IMPERFECT in his life. Nothing he did was ever good enough! In his anxiety about the two bad bricks, he had failed to notice the 998 good bricks that he had set perfectly despite having no prior experience in brick work!

His whole outlook changed from blaming and complaining to one of acceptance and gratitude.

Question

1. Why Ajahn Brahm disappointed about the wall
   a. the wall colored in wrong color
   b. the wall height wasn't right
   c. the place of the wall wasn't right
   d. there were 2 bricks that crooked
   e. the wall was destroyed by others

2. In Cambridge, Ajahn Brahm learned how to lay bricks
    true             false

3. What Ajahn Brahm do to correct the bricks?
He wanted to destroy the wall, at least grind the bricks

4. Why he always sad when he passed the wall?
It reminded him about all his previous failures and imperfection

5. What the visitor's comment about the wall?
He said that it is a fine wall

Moral Value

How many times we only see "2 bricks" in our lives? Doesn't everyone had something in their lives that maybe "crooked"? If we continuously see our failures, we will always suffer. We have always "2 bricks" in our lives, but the perfect bricks in each one of us are much, much more than the mistakes.

WHITE HOUSE DOWN

Action | Drama | Thriller - 28 June 2013 (USA)

Synopsis

John Cale (Channing Tatum) is a United States Capitol Police officer assigned to Speaker of the House of Representatives Eli Raphelson (Richard Jenkins) after Cale saved Raphelson's nephew's life during a tour in Afghanistan. Cale is struggling to develop a better relationship with his daughter Emily (Joey King), who has a strong enthusiasm for politics. He hopes to impress her by getting a job with the Secret Service, but the interview is conducted by Carol Finnerty (Maggie Gyllenhaal), a former college acquaintance of his who believes that he is unqualified due to a lack of respect for authority. After lying to Emily about the outcome of the interview, she and Cale join a tour of the White House. At the same time, U.S. President James Sawyer (Jamie Foxx) proposes a controversial peace treaty between allied countries to remove military forces from the Middle East.

Meanwhile, a man disguised as a janitor detonates a bomb at the center of the United States Capitol, causing the collapse of the building's dome. Raphelson - who was in the Capitol but is uninjured - and Finnerty are taken to a secure command center underneath the Pentagon while Vice President Alvin Hammond (Michael Murphy) is taken aboard Air Force One. The White House is put on lockdown separating Cale from Emily (who had left the tour group to use the restroom). Meanwhile, mercenaries led by Emil Stenz (Jason Clarke) start killing off most of the Secret Service and take the tour group hostage, but Cale manages to take a gun from a mercenary named Carl Killick (Kevin Rankin) and escapes to go and find his daughter. Meanwhile, retiring Head of the Presidential Detail Martin Walker (James Woods) escorts President Sawyer and his detail to the Presidential Emergency Operations Center. Once Sawyer gains access, Walker kills everyone else in Sawyer's detail, revealing himself to be the leader of the attack; he wants revenge for his son who was killed during a botched black ops mission. Cale, who fails to find Emily, kills a mercenary and takes his gun and radio. Using the radio, Cale locates and rescues the President.

Walker and Stenz bring in Skip Tyler (Jimmi Simpson) to hack into the defense system, but they still require Sawyer to activate the nuclear football. Emily, while hiding, records a video of the mercenaries and uploads it to YouTube before eventually being captured by Killick. Walker demands $400 million from the Federal Reserve as ransom for the hostages. Cale and Sawyer manage to get in contact with the Pentagon, and Finnerty tells Cale to get Sawyer out through a series of secret underground tunnels. Finnerty then uses Emily's video to discover the mercenaries' identities, discovering that they used to work for various government agencies and radical political groups. They are informed that Stenz, a former Special Forces operative, was disavowed and burned on mission, leading to his capture by the Taliban. They also discover that Walker has terminal cancer, suggesting his involvement to be a suicide mission and that the attack is not for ransom. Cale and Sawyer find the tunnel gate rigged with an explosive and are forced to escape in a presidential limousine. After a car chase/shootout with Stenz on the White House lawn, Cale and Sawyer are flipped into the White House pool after Cale gets distracted by the sight of Killick holding Emily at gunpoint. A gunfight erupts which results in an explosion that leaves Sawyer and Cale presumed dead. Aboard Air Force One, Hammond is then sworn in as President.

When Cale and Sawyer reveal they are still alive, they learn Hammond has approved an aerial incursion by Delta Force to take back the White House. Knowing the mercenaries have Javelin surface-to-air missiles, Cale tries but fails to stop the mercenaries from shooting down the helicopters. Cale gets into a fight with Stenz and ends up dropping his White House passes for himself and Emily while escaping. Having already learned of Emily from the video, Stenz, knowing that she is Cale's daughter, takes her to Walker in the Oval Office. Meanwhile, Tyler finishes the upload to NORAD and launches a missile at Air Force One, killing everyone on board, including Hammond. Raphelson is then sworn in as President and, in a last ditch effort to end the crisis, orders an air strike on the White House. Finnerty informs Cale of Raphelson's decision.

Walker tells Cale over the White House intercom to surrender Sawyer or he will shoot Emily. Sawyer ultimately surrenders himself to save Emily, knowing Cale could still save them both if he was free. Holding the pair in the Oval Office, Walker reveals to Sawyer that his motive for the attack was to convey a message of American power. Because of Sawyer's dislike of military force, as well as backing out of the mission that killed his son, Walker had grown to believe Sawyer was too weak to be President; by launching a nuclear attack on Iran, Walker had hoped to regain international respect for America and avenge his own personal loss. He asks for Sawyer to activate the nuclear football. Sawyer refuses, and tries to convince Walker that his son did not die in vain, and that the peace treaty was a form of victory. When Walker threatens to shoot Emily again, the alarms and sprinklers are activated by Cale setting fire to the Lincoln Bedroom. In the chaos, Tyler tries to escape but encounters the tunnel gate bomb. When he tries to deactivate it, it detonates instead, killing him. Killick finds Cale and tries to kill him, but is ambushed by Donnie Smith, the White House tour guide (Nicolas Wright), who bludgeons Killick to death with a clock. After freeing the hostages and entrusting Donnie to get them out safely, Cale battles Stenz and ultimately kills him with a grenade belt. Using the explosion to catch him off guard, Sawyer attacks a distracted Walker, but Walker gains the upper hand and forces Sawyer to activate the football before apparently shooting him dead. Using updated launch codes from an anonymous source, Walker targets various cities in Iran, but before he can initiate the launch, Cale smashes through the wall of the Oval Office with a presidential SUV, and kills Walker with the SUV's minigun. Cale warns Emily of the air strike, and she takes a presidential flag and waves it on the front lawn, prompting the pilots to call off the attack. Meanwhile, Sawyer reveals himself to be alive since the bullet that hit him hit a pocket watch his wife (Garcelle Beauvais) had given him. Finnerty calls them to reveal that the mercenaries were not hired by Walker, and that there is another person behind the attack. Cale realizes who it is and asks Sawyer for his help in exposing the person.

Later, Finnerty arrives at the White House with Raphelson. When Cale tells them Sawyer was killed, Raphelson then orders troops to be placed back into the Middle East, which would go against Sawyer's peace treaty. Cale then reveals Raphelson had conspired with Walker to orchestrate the attack because of Raphelson's opposition to Sawyer's treaty and then proves it by having Finnerty call the call-back number on Walker's pager, which was the source of the updated launch codes. Sawyer arrives and has Raphelson taken into custody, treating his taking of the Presidency as a coup d'état. Sawyer then officially offers Cale a job in the Secret Service and takes him and Emily on an aerial tour of Washington, D.C. on his way to the hospital. Realizing an increased need for peace due to the day's events, Russia, Iran, China, and other Middle Eastern and Asian countries agree to sign Sawyer's peace treaty.

Microburst

Posted by Unknown on 20.45 with No comments
A microburst is a very localized column of sinking air, producing damaging divergent and straight-line winds at the surface that are similar to, but distinguishable from, tornadoes, which generally have convergent damage. There are two types of microbursts: wet microbursts and dry microbursts. They go through three stages in their life cycle: the downburst, outburst, and cushion stages. The scale and suddenness of a microburst makes it a great danger to aircraft due to the low-level wind shear caused by its gust front, with several fatal crashes having been attributed to the phenomenon over the past several decades.

A microburst often has high winds that can knock over fully grown trees. They usually last for a duration of a couple of seconds to several minutes.A distinction can be made between a wet microburst which consists of precipitation and a dry microburst which consists of virga.[3] They generally are formed by precipitation-cooled air rushing to the surface, but they perhaps also could be powered from the high speed winds of the jet stream deflected to the surface in a thunderstorm (see downburst). Microbursts are recognized as capable of generating wind speeds higher than 75 m/s (168 mph; 270 km/h).

There are a handful of factors that cause microbursts to develop, including mid-level dry air entrainment, cooling beneath the thunderstorm cloud base, sublimation (occurs when the cloud base is above the freezing level), and the existence of rain and/or hail within the thunderstorm (i.e. precipitation loading). Some microbursts are driven by a combination of these factors while others may only be driven by one factor. Due to this, microbursts can be subdivided into three primary types -- wet, dry, and hybrid. Cooling beneath the thunderstorm cloud base and sublimation are the primary forcing mechanisms with dry microbursts. Dry microbursts typically occur with very little precipitation at the surface or aloft, hence the dry type. Wet microbursts, on the other hand, are primarily driven by entrainment of mid-level dry air and precipitation loading. Hybrid microbursts possess characteristics of both wet and dry microbursts. They are forced in the mid-levels by dry air entrainment and/or precipitation loading and in the low-levels by cooling beneath the cloud base and/or sublimation.

Downbursts are a particular hazard to aircraft at low level, especially on take-off or landing. An aircraft approaching a downburst will first encounter a strong headwind, which will lead to an increase in indicated airspeed. When trying to fly a set airspeed on approach, a pilot might therefore be tempted to reduce power. This would be very dangerous because, as the aircraft passes thorough the downburst, the wind becomes a tailwind and the indicated airspeed and lift drops. The significant downward force of air in the downburst may be enough to force the aircraft into the ground or at least cause it to lose a significant amount of height. The subsequent loss of performance, as the aircraft encounters tailwinds, may cause further loss of height and be enough to cause the aircraft to stall. Once caught in a downburst, escape is only possible by flying straight ahead; whichever way an aircraft turns, it will encounter the tail winds and the associated performance impact. If the aircraft is in a turn at that point then the stalling speed will be higher, possibly making the situation worse.
